new years deal - the next chapter in the creme organization ecplise series comes from cosmic garden with three original tracks and one remix from orgue electronique. little is known about cosmic garden other than he is from southern italy and has had two eps out in 2016, one on hotmix and one on cosmic rhythm. he heads out the blocks here with reptilian treant , six minutes of lo-fi deep house that is roomy and atmospheric. lazy synths bring soul and a gentle chatter of claps and hits helps drive it along. rare centaur is also way below the surface but is darker and more celestial, with turbulent bass, frantic claps and angelic chords glowing like a white light at the end of a tunnel. dutch house and electro don orgue electronique then remixes reptilian treant into something that is slick and serene, with metallic lines dancing above rubbery drums as big piano chords boucle up top. it is joyous and colourful and truly majestic before final track apocalyptic moose takes us back down into a mournful house vibe that echoes chicago with its roughhewn analogue textures and lovestruck chords.

lord of the isles, a.k.a. neil mcdonald, has spent the better part of a decade steadily producing and releasing beautiful music. the esp institute has always wholeheartedly believed in neil’s work ethic and his journey as an artist who constantly refines his vision, and when we inevitably approached in hopes of working together, we were enamoured by the sheer breadth and depth of work he had in progress’. there are two types of artists. one internalises their process, endlessly perfecting their work while finding the endpoint a massive hurdle, in turn they produce immaculate yet very little art. the other is continuously inspired, so full of ideas they can barely work fast enough to articulate them all. the art becomes by-product of their larger trajectory and not just a collection of endpoints. lord of the isles seems to be both, always in an evolving state of process where the work is constantly shed to make way for the new layer growing beneath, yet he holds his cards closely, cherry picking when and with whom he releases his art into the world. neil is simply prolific. he shared with us a vast catalog of unheard beauty, which over a long span of time was collaboratively shaped into his debut album “in waves”. the title speaks to neil’s process both intimately and from afar, it speaks to the emotional ebb and flow of the music itself, and ultimately it speaks to the listener. ahead of the album’s release, we are proud to share with you the single ‘weh-in’, a mesmerizing arpeggio melody that opens and closes, purrs and barks, and plays nicely with its percussive accompaniment over more than 10 minutes. this lengthy single version of the track is joined by a dark and stormy, exclusive non-album cut entitled ‘pik’, as well as a big room rave remix by esp institute resident ian blevins, which take us to a slightly more frantic place while retaining the euphoric essence of the original.

rekids regular markus suckut returns to radio slave’s renowned imprint with a solid techno two-tracker this november. recent years has seen markus suckut’s distinguished career enter its next phase, whether playing a role in the relaunch of steve o’sullivan’s mosaic imprint, debuting on rekids, or pioneering his own imprints exile (alongside johannes heil) and sckt. in his next outing on rekids the german dj and producer demonstrates functional techno from the off, initiating with the cavernous and uncompromising ‘10 y’ which forges a swelling tension using echoing stabs and rolling kicks. on the flip, the groveled ‘zero nine six’ meanders forward with subtle bass tones as mesmerising synth throbs gradually ebb into the mix.

lanthan.audio, the german label founded by christian gerlach, now presents its sixth release from abstract division . the netherland-based dou delivers a 4 track ep with two originals and two remixes by milton bradley (do not resist the beat) and albert van abbe (vanabbe). abstract divisions corrosive mind stands with a significant synthline that screws into your mind. surrounded from its open and pumping drums its really developing into a mesmerising piece for the dance floor with a high recognition value. milton bradley strips it down and presents a very strong tool with a great tension in itself. intervention grabs up its name and reflects the word into sound. it comes along with a exciting touch and builds up slowly but strong. with potent drums, like we knew it from abstract division, it is definetly a track for various situations but not without loosing its goal. albert van abbe abstracts the core and reshapes it with classic drum sounds and adds an emotional melody, its centerpiece. tight and thoughtful next strike from lanthan.audio again, which is expanding advisedly.

station shiva recordings launch with a 3-track ep from estrato aurora, one half of the pajaro dune project. this one’s heavy on the electro and takes its influences from the early days of chicago house and european rave culture.

the inaugural release from raffaele attanasio’s letters from jerusalem represents a dark descent through various musical forms. the name of the label itself pays homage to jerusalem as a city and its metaphorical location at the center of the earth. the ep, then, is an extension of this imagery in its use of music as a descriptive source of the emotions that lie within man’s innermost recesses. credible threat, though ambitious in its breadth, is cohesive in its style and sound design: brooding, industrial, and percussive, this release is a shadowy and refreshing installment from a rising star in the underground scene.

deep, storming salegy sounds from madagascar. salegy is the electrified updating of the traditional antsa style from the north-west of the island — 6/8 rhythms, layered with percussion and call-and-response vocals — and the vetson’ androy group one of its most popular proponents. from 1978, mavandeza has the heady urgency of killer fela — with two women singers out front, psychedelic organ and prowling-lion bass. the flip is from a decade later, by malagasy superstar eusebe jaojaby — rough and tough dancefloor worries, with a mazy string-line, mash-it-down percussion and lilting flute. another sizzler from sofrito.

channeling the spirit of moodymann, rick wilhite and other such detroit house greats, guilhem monin follows up on the promise of his debut for colors last year with this sizzling slice of rough hewn deep house gold where the samples stay locked in the groove and the atmosphere of the room is captured forever on the record. -social music- would surely not sound out of place on kdj, while -i plan to stay a believer- calls upon the warming tones of rick wade et al amidst an irresistible 909 house bump. -vlg- gets a little more sassy with its choppy edit style, and then -people- brings in a fist-pumping riff to hit the sweet spot later in the night.

marcel vogel s lumberjacks in hell label shows no signs of slowing as it ramps up a killer new salvo from debutant artist c scott. -climb on- is an uptempo workout to capture the absolute peak of the party in the funkiest of ways, while -hands free- provides an apt alternative with its slow, organ-led whimsy. disco remains the backbone of the sound here, whatever tempo the track rolls at and wherever it may head. -stuttering- demonstrates this perfectly with its heavily treated, head-spinning fx still capturing that classic good-time mood, while -at ease- finishes on a life-affirming canter of rhodes led celebration.

having originally surfaced on creme organization back in 2002, luke eargoggle and ronnie johansson s monkeyshop project is an intermittent treat that offers the best of warm synth-led electronic disco. on their second outing for ali renault s vivod label (after the excellent escape from the mental zoo ep in 2014) the pair bring yet more of that addictive, utopian dance magic on this new record. -island of love- is indeed a romantic club burner with smatterings of vintage synth pop in its bones, while -heartbreak- takes a more overtly italo direction and sounds just as strong with it. obergman then takes -island of love- to task with a respectful remix that shines a few different synth lines and beat patterns through the same fuzzy prism.

celebrating his five years anniversary with a twelfth release, the french imprint clft decided to introduce a new artist on its roster. argentinian producer luis ruiz delivers here a 303% acid ep for his debut on the label. dah-dah-dah, gwon-gwon-gwon, ga-gyown-gyown… this sounds very caustic, don’t sleep on it!

increasingly known for his productions as much as his storied dj sets, eric cloutier approaches the studio with the same kind of precision that marks out his club and festival appearances. on this first release on palinoia he exercises a keen sense of control over playful elements, not least on lead track -heuristic-. the nagging lead synth may hop around the mix, but it stays locked on to a thoroughly focused undercarriage of drums and low end that suits the professional techno set. -ipseity- is lighter in its demeanour thanks to some calming pad tones, but the strong structure of the track remains. the release rounds up with the slower thump of -opprobrium-, surmising cloutier s attitude to the warm-up part of a serious, long-lasting dj set.

the second chapter of the various artists serie -obscura europa s.a- is here. synth based -dark band sound- on its maximal exposure. from brazil to belgium, passing by switzerland, poland and australia, this serie presents some of best darkwave hymns uncomprehensively not pressed on vinyl to date. all tracks have been analogically remastered specially for this vinyl version by eric van wonterghem.

african scream contest’ is the third release by the analog africa label. the project initially took off in august 2005 when label owner and vinyl collector samy ben redjeb arrived in cotonou, benin, “without any special expectations, just hoping to lay my hands on few good records - what i found in the process cannot really be described in words-. this first trip was followed by eight more to the region. thirty months and few thousand records later analog africa proudly presents this 14-track compilation. redjeb conducted 16 interviews in various cities in benin and togo with artists, producers and sound engineers to reconstruct the history of the 70s music scene for the 44 pages booklet which also features many rare photographs directly received from the artists. delve into the forgotten raw and psychedelic afro sounds from 70s benin and togo and experience the african scream contest. very, very limited copies in, and this might notcome in anymore.... tip!

harvey sutherland’s latest 12” marks the inaugural release for clarity recordings, an imprint established by sutherland for modern australian records. the first new music from the melbourne producer since last year’s cuts for mcde, the double a-side priestess / bravado features his live trio bermuda at full tilt, with an ensemble of hand clapping friends. self-described “lounge room disco burners”, the record summons the groove experiments of patrick adams, bill laswell and arthur russell, while retaining harvey’s soulful tones and club-ready arrangements. priestess evolves slowly, a nine-minute mind dance that ultimately reaches a celestial state. sutherland’s piano lines bounce off drummer graeme pogson’s unwavering four-on-the-floor, while one-man string section tamil rogeon travels skyward. live standout bravado is played with determined precision, locking into a tough backbeat that only breaks once sutherland’s warbling lead solo approaches its resonant peak.

Æ is the third part of bjarki triptych of lps to be released this year. Æ is a particularly icelandic form, pronounced “i” in english, bjarki thinks it just looks good. here it is a selection of music that is at its core quite simple, with restrained instrumentation, made on hardware and features a selection of older works and the most recent produced just weeks ago. bjarki is from iceland. born and raised. despite the fact that bjarki is known for making extremely powerful dance floor tracks he doesn’t seem to belong to any particular genre. something this triptych of lps demonstrates very well. his music is at times cinematic and there’s a story behind each track. bjarki’s music always has something to do with him personally, but he’d rather the listener lose themselves in the music than pay much attention to the man behind them. either on a record or to one of his ever evolving live sets.

following his last two ep releases on southern fried records, half-austrian/half-russian artist producer motsa (real name valerio dittrich) has announced his forthcoming fourth ep petricolour , due out 4th november on his own label imprint. petricolour ep is written about the decline of our western society, its beauty, wealth and our opportunities having reached a peak and the onset of gradual decay. this is reflected in the accompanying artwork (photograph by andreas peter wall) , the flowers symbolising deterioration but retaining some beauty and hope. throughout the ep, motsa incorporates organic textures and sounds recorded from nature and his surroundings.

remix by ben cozmo d cenac living legend house producer better known as newcleus, the brooklyn/new york electro and old school hip hop group that gained popularity in the early 1980s for its ‘jam-ons revenge and ‘jam on it.

20 year old utrecht based producer julian alexander steps up for the next release in infuse with a ep of raw house grooves. sweet rain kicks things off, its deeply rounded bass and swung percussion imbuing the track with a real sense of groove. cabin fever continues the vibe whilst present brings a sense of warmth an undulating pad lending the track a more blissed out feel whilst straight furrows a tougher path with a dirtier warehouse kick and metallic percussion.

brianna price aka b.traits, launches her new record label venture, in.toto, with a self-produced two track single, still point/north shore. in.toto, to mean as a whole, altogether, unity, will focus not only on her own productions and releases, but also provide a platform for up and coming artists, and those producers already championed in her dj sets and hugely loved bbc radio 1 show, by way of new material and compilation albums. the label will be backed by bespoke events and club nights, enabling the artists and the sound of in.toto to reach far and wide. on the labels inaugural release, brianna sets the tone perfectly with still point. gnarly, rasping bass punctures the gentle piano riff and ethereal synth pads as this club ready track blossoms into life, the assured and driving drums never letting the energy drop for one second. on the flip side of the limited edition, purple 12inch vinyl release, north shore opens with warm idm pulses and tones, grandiose strings and vocal refrains create a huge sound that takes its unexpected breakbeat twist, reminiscent of british rave heroes orbital, whilst holding its own with its fresh and bright production.

with half a century of existence, beninese band poly-rythmo can easily be considerate as legends of the african music alongside sela kuti and tinariwen. drawing their name from the extensive mix of influences that forged their sound (american soul and funk, nigerian afrobeat, french chanson, congolese rumba, etc.), they are known to be impressively productive as they released from 1969 to 1980 hundreds of eps and dozens of albums. in 2014, orchestra conductor florent mazzoleni visited the band and decided to produce this new album recorded in the legendary african studio satel. with its warm tone and mastery of rhythm variations, madjafalao will instantaneously become a classic of afrobeat and poly-rythmo will share their warm joie de vivre with thousands of people during their european tour starting in late october.

after their initial 7- back in 2015 the boys have been riding high, riding low and put together 2 more tracks of west coast psychedelic blue eyed soul... galloping percussion ride through tear it down while the harmonies build around the lead vocal that is backed by a wonder rhodes accompaniment that takes on a life of its own and the track builds to crescendo before opening up and allowing the vocal to come back for a final outing... ‘sugar rush is a more downtempo number, tripped out vocals of acid adventures and wonderful big strings to create a trip through mustard yellow fields, purple skies and forests of candy green trees... the flip side see s the cosmic capers of dan wainwright twist sugar rush into a 9 minute epic trip designed for the dance floor

decoder recordings is back with its second release. swedish dj and producer mattias fridell delivers strong driving techno on the ep called the tasker. it contains four tracks, and the title track immediately discloses what s the deal with this ep: quality loop based techno with fridell s signature clearly present. current world ecclesiarchy is the second track and on the same level as the tasker, while 33 endocytosis is a bit more funky. a pounding remix of that last track is delivered by the binary mind.

fragil musique reaches the 20th release mark, and offers us a very special debut ep from a newcomer to watch. vidock lands on the label with an unusual three tracker, oscillating between intense breakbeat excursions and moody techno hybrids. -dub attack- is the main club weapon here. cycling around the drum loop, pads and samples build up to heavy tension moments, then fade away to fully unleash the force of the stripped down broken kick-bass groove. the pressure is strong and never stops rising, gradually bringing the dancer to a manic arms-shaking state, while sporadic laser synth shots and percussion hints sprinkle the track, smartly shaping its three-dimensional aspect. on the b side, dance music ufo - metamorph - is an epic journey through what feels like unexplored fringes of sample driven emotional dance music. movie-esque haunting voices and disturbing sirens set the vibe, inviting one to drift along this dark and coloured ride. fellow nantes native simo cell goes trippy on the remix, taking apart the most heady bits of the original and extending them into a deep and breaky piece.

undoubtedly a prolific artist at various points in his career, arjen schat revives his ohrwert alias for its first ep in three years with the first release for local traffic. the dubby tendencies of this particular project shine through in abundance on -tornus- with its voluminous reverbs and shimmering delays, all guided by a steady-ticking set of drums. throughout the ep the production values are impeccable, perhaps shining through the most on the blissful closer -weallian- which layers up melancholic synth tones into a beautiful configuration and rounding it out with an instinctive bassline for a heart-melting end result.
